    Poetry Wall in The Street

Poetry Wall: Fostering Literacy Skills Across All Year Levels

At our Private Primary School, pupils across all year levels, from Montessori Year One to Form VI, recently created a poetry wall in ‘The Street’ as part of their literacy development. This unit allowed them to explore different forms of poetry, showcasing their creativity and language skills in unique and engaging ways.

Exploring Sounds and Nouns: Montessori and Pre-Prep Poems

Montessori pupils in Year One embarked on a journey of self-discovery by exploring the sounds from the first letter of their names. Building on this foundation, Year Two pupils expanded their exploration by delving into other nouns beginning with the same sound. Taking it a step further, the Pre-Prep children wrote acrostic poems, using their own names as a theme for noun exploration. These early poetry experiences laid the groundwork for their artistic expression and language development.

From Rhymes to Haikus: Poetry Progression in the Upper Years

As pupils progress through the primary years, their poetic skills continue to evolve. Form I pupils focused on creating rhyming poems, showcasing their ability to find words with similar sounds and compose verses with rhythm and rhyme. Form II pupils explored the unique structure of diamond poems, capturing concise and contrasting thoughts in a visually striking format.

Form III pupils engaged in the art of biography poems, crafting verses that depicted the lives and accomplishments of notable individuals. In Form IV, pupils connected their name poems to their class novel study, allowing for a deeper exploration of characters and themes. Form V pupils experimented with cinquains, a five-line poetic form, honing their ability to distill their thoughts into concise and evocative verses. Lastly, Form VI pupils delved into the world of haikus, mastering the art of capturing a moment in just three lines.

Celebrating Pupil Compositions: The Poetry Wall in The Street

The progression in writing themes and content from our youngest pupils to the seniors is a testament to their growth and development as poets. It is heartwarming to witness the creative journey of our pupils and to see their literacy skills blossom. We invite you to stop by The Street and admire the Poetry Wall, where you will find a compilation of their remarkable compositions. Take a moment to appreciate the lovely work of your children and celebrate their accomplishments in the realm of poetry.

We extend our appreciation to Ms. H Ledermann, Leader of Literacy, for her guidance and support in nurturing our pupils’ literary talents. Through poetry, we not only cultivate language proficiency but also create a platform for self-expression, reflection, and the sharing of ideas within our vibrant school community.
