Irish – Gaeilge

Irish and Gaeilge taught

Irish – Gaeilge is taught throughout the School from the Juniors in the Montessori Department, right up to the children at the top of the School in Form VI. The main aim is to give children the skills to allow them to hold conversations in Irish and to understand the spoken language. Above all, the central goal is to foster the child’s enthusiasm for Irish and to make it enjoyable and relevant.

There are four distinct areas of learning Irish:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

The four areas of the Irish curriculum are taught using ten ‘themes’, which are extended year on year. The ten themes are: Myself, At Home, The School, Food, TV, Shopping, Pastimes, Clothes, Weather, and Special Occasions.

The teaching of Irish is further enhanced with a week long visit by the children in Form VI to the Gaelteacht during the Summer Term.
