INDEPENDENT LEARNING

Educational provision is about learning – providing pupils with knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes that will enable them to be successful in later life.  The essential work habits and dispositions for effective learning are developed very early in a child’s life. Over the past decade or more, it has become evident that what is of importance for the future has changed, for example, factual knowledge is becoming less important as most people have immediate access to vast databases of information through digital media, whereas the ability to evaluate information is of ever-increasing importance. As we plan our curriculum and review our methods of teaching we have to be cognisant of this.  At Castle Park we strive to provide our pupils with a rich tapestry of experiences that will enhance:

- Creativity & Innovation
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
- Communication
- Collaboration
- Information Literacy
- Media Literacy
- Flexibility & Adaptability
- Initiative & Self Direction
- Leadership & Responsibility

As we reflect on the experiences we offer, we try to identify activities for our pupils that will increase the number of opportunities for them to develop these competencies.  This is done within the context of the Irish Primary Curriculum, 1999, with a continuing and rigorous emphasis on the core skills of literacy, numeracy and oracy.  The future is uncertain but we will best prepare our learners by giving them a broad and balanced education that will lay the foundations for the future requirements to deal with novel challenges that are unknown to us at this point in time.
