The Irish Primary Curriculum for Junior (Pre-Prep 2) and Senior Infants (Pre-Prep 3) is covered, complemented by extensive use of the Montessori teaching methodology and materials. Reading is introduced on an individual basis when children are ready and they are also thoroughly prepared for the transition to the Prep department, particularly in Irish and Mathematics. Pupils undertake themes and cross-curricular project work in topics such as The Rainforest and Under the Sea, related to the Social Studies and Science curricula. The children have regular access to the School’s Parker Library, Music Room and ICT suite, they also benefit from access to a dedicated class set of iPads within the Department.

Pupils are educated in bright and spacious classrooms, each of which leads directly to a secure, dedicated playground. Outdoor playtime is enhanced by a selection of sturdy bikes and trikes along with a playhouse, climbing frame and sandpits. Adjacent to the classrooms and playground is the Day Care, offering a comfortable and relaxing space for before and after school activities.

Pupils in the Pre-Prep department avail of the School’s extensive sports facilities, regularly using the Sports Hall and 25m swimming pool. Outdoor activities such as nature walks and Forest Schools take place in our extensive grounds. All children attend a weekly PE session with the School’s two sports teachers and the Pre-Prep 2 & 3 children also have a weekly swimming lesson during their school day. Pre-Prep 1 children, over the age of 4, may avail of swimming lessons run separately by the Castle Park Swim Academy after school.

Music is an important subject, and all children attend weekly lessons in the Music Room with the Director of Music who introduces singing, percussion and recorder.
